Vadose Zone Test Facility (VZTF)
The VZTF at the Hanford Site consists of eight 25-ft-deep lysimeters surrounding a central instrument caisson. Built in 1978, the VZTF (formerly called the Buried Waste Test Facility, or BWTF) was used in the past to study the migration of tritium and cobalt-60 in Hanford sands. After removal of the waste, one of the lysimeters has been used in a long-term study of deep drainage rates in a sandy soil that is devoid of vegetation.
