Direct simulation of multiphase flow remains a challenging problem for computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The need to explicitly model the dynamics of the interface between different phases and the associated problems of adjusting the computational grid used to compute the flow within each phase present tremendous challenges for conventional CFD approaches. Over the last decade, an alternative to conventional CFD has been developed that shows great promise for simulating multiphase flows and flows in topologically complex media. This approach, referred to as the Lattice-Boltzmann method, is a simulation method for modeling continuum flow and transport in complex systems and is based on a discretization of the Boltzmann equation. In contrast, most CFD methods are based on a discretization of the continuum hydrodynamic field equations.
