EED business model, January 2008

PNNL is committed to increasing U.S. energy capacity and reducing dependence on imported oil. Our goal is to build a bridge from a carbon-based energy economy to one based on renewables while advancing reliable, sustainable and efficient energy use.

The Energy market sector follows a robust business model that allows us to align our energy capabilities with clients' needs. We focus on short- and long-term targets of opportunity with potential national impact. Current targets include:

  • dramatically improving the performance of the nation's power system, enhancing its security and positioning the grid as a central asset for national strategic requirements
  • advancing vehicle efficiency, electrification and hydrogen storage technology; and accelerating deployment of next generation bio-based fuels and chemicals
  • improving the overall energy efficiency of both residential and commercial buildings as well as industrial processes
  • developing first-of-a-kind, near-zero emission hydrocarbon processing technologies, power generation technologies and carbon sequestration solutions
  • creating novel production approaches for unconventional hydrocarbons.

Our capabilities and staff reside in four areas:
