Bob Dahowski and Casie Davidson - Research honored by Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum

Congratulations to EED’s Bob Dahowski and Casie Davidson, and FCSD’s Jim Dooley, along with their Chinese and U.S. collaborators, for receiving a recognition award from the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum.  The team recently completed an intensive five-year research project that revealed that China has enormous and widely distributed deep geologic storage formations that could allow cost-effective, large scale deployment of capture and store carbon dioxide from industrial sources for at least a century. The Forum is a Ministerial-level international climate change initiative focused on the development of carbon capture and sequestration technologies. The Forum presented the award during its 3rd Ministerial Meeting in London in October 2009. The award went to the research team comprising Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, and Leonardo Technologies, Inc.

Xiao-Dong Zhou - Invitation to 2010 Indo-American Frontiers of Engineering

Xiao-Dong Zhou was invited by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) to attend the 2010 Indo-American Frontiers of Engineering Symposium (IAFOE) to be held in March 2010 in Agra, India. The Indo-U.S. FOE brings together approximately 35 outstanding American and Indian engineers ages 30-45 from industry, universities, and other research institutions to discuss leading-edge research and technical work across a range of engineering fields. Participation is by invitation only.

Zhou is leading research on materials for energy conversion, including cathode materials for solid oxide fuel cells and thermoelectric oxides. He has been principal investigator or co-principal investigator of several materials development programs related to energy science and technology, and thermoelectrics.

The Indo-U.S. FOE is a bilateral program held once every two years. It will facilitate an interdisciplinary transfer of knowledge and methodology that eventually could lead to collaborative networks of engineers from the two countries.

John Vienna - Named ACerS Fellow

John Vienna named as Fellow to the American Ceramics Society. Dr. Vienna has published over 150 journal articles, conference papers and technical reports in materials science and its applications to waste management.

Dr. Vienna has performed independent research in basic waste form materials chemistry, nucleation and growth kinetics, waste form processing, and thermodynamics of multi-component, multi-phased waste forms. He has developed waste forms for excess nuclear materials and wastes at several US and international nuclear waste sites.

Congratulations, John!

Mark Morgan - Supporting Friend of IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Award

Mark Morgan received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 2009 "Supporting Friend of IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Award" from Leonard Bond, director of IEEE Region 6 (Western USA), during a senior management meeting May 28.

IEEE is the world's largest technical society with nearly 400,000 members worldwide, including areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics among others.

Mark has been consistently supporting the activities of the IEEE local Section and the Power & Energy Chapter and encouraging his staff to participate and play leadership roles in the technical society.

Congratulations, Mark!

Siva Pilli - ASME’s Early Career Leadership Intern

Siva Pilli was selected for ASME's Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE) Program. Siva has been an ASME member since 2007 and currently serves as peer reviewer for ASME journals.

The goal of the ECLIPSE program is to engage, identify, and begin to develop potential leaders for ASME by placing early career engineers in highly visible and productive roles within the ASME organization.

Congratulations, Siva!

2009 Science Education Advocate Award

EED’s Kim Fowler was named Washington State LASER Advocate "an award that recognized two individuals who have gone above and beyond by promoting the importance of science education among the general public and the education system.

As a passionate proponent for science education and reform, Kim has developed a set of energy, environment, and sustainable related activities, which she brings to classrooms ranging from third grade through high school. These activities were developed by Kim after learning about the value of inquiry-centered lessons; they are intended to be linked to the existing classroom curriculum.

Kim has been instrumental in helping others find their niche in science and mathematics, encouraging young women and minorities to pursue technical career paths. Her work in science education has yielded prestigious honors.

2009 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power & Energy Society (PES) Outstanding Young Engineer Award

Energy & Environment Directorate, will receive the 2009 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power & Energy Society (PES) Outstanding Young Engineer Award. The award recognizes engineers 35 years of age or under "for outstanding contributions in the leadership of technical society activities including local and/or transnational PES and other technical societies, leadership in community and humanitarian activities and evidence of technical competence through significant engineering achievements."

As a recipient, Henry will designate a college or university to receive a $2,000 electrical engineering scholarship from the society. He is scheduled to accept this award at the awards luncheon July 28 at the IEEE PES General Meeting in Calgary, Alberta. The IEEE is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology, with more than 375,000 members in more than 160 countries.

Energy Expert - Technology recognized with FLC Award

Energy Expert is the commercial version of PNNL's Whole-Building Energy Diagnostician tool--adapted for the Web and licensed to NorthWrite Inc. Energy Expert monitors energy use in buildings and by major building systems. The technology uses trend data to automatically detect and provide alerts for anomalies in energy consumption as well as supporting information on impacts. It automatically creates a model of energy use as data is accumulated. The model is then used to predict future energy use and alerts building operations staff to variances between actual measured consumption and the expected measurements.

EED researchers recognized include Michael Brambley, Srinivas Katipamula, Krishnan Gowri, Teresa Carlon, David Chassin, Rob Pratt and Dave Hunt, as well as Bob Silva in Technology Commercialization.

Grid Friendly™ Appliance Controller - 2008 R&D 100 Award Winner

The Grid FriendlyTM Appliance Controller is a small circuit board built into household appliances that reduces stress on the power grid by continually monitoring fluctuations in available power. During times of high demand, appliances equipped with the controller automatically shut down for a short period of time, resulting in a cumulative reduction that can maintain stability on the grid. The GFA Controller received a Federal Laboratory Consortium award for Excellence in Technology Transfer in 2007.

EED researchers recognized include Rob Pratt, David Chassin, Jeffery Dagle, Donald Hammerstrom, Michael Kintner-Meyer and Paul Boyd, as well as NSD’s Larry Reid.
