Biography
Dr. Dan Gaspar is the Technical Group Manager for the Materials Chemistry and Surface Research Group in the Energy and Efficiency Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The Materials Chemistry and Surface Research Group includes materials scientists, chemists and physicists developing detailed understanding of interfacial chemistry and physics and innovative approaches to technology development for applications such as energy efficient organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), novel energy storage materials, enabling technologies for display, solar and energy storage devices, and separations and sensing.
The group’s research is focused on new approaches for synthesis and fabrication of new materials (bulk and thin film), as well as relating extrinsic material properties to their chemical/physical properties at the atomic, molecular, and nanoscale. The group maintains significant laboratory holdings for the synthesis and characterization of these materials and systems, including both wet chemistry capabilities and large, specialized vacuum deposition systems. Interfacial phenomena are a particular interest, including functionalization of the surfaces of nanomaterials, along with charge and mass transport across interfaces.
Research Interests
- Dr. Gaspar’s personal research interests are focused on the application of surface analysis methods to solve challenging real world problems. Through the application and development of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron microscopy and other techniques, he has contributed to research across a wide spectrum of subjects including the analysis of nanoscale materials, the chemistry of atmospheric aerosol particles and environmentally relevant surfaces, TOF-SIMS analysis of bacteria, semiconductor processing, and metal-semiconductor interfaces, leading to the publication of approximately 30 publications.
