Biography
Currently a Staff Scientist at PNNL, Leo Fifield joined the Laboratory as a post-doc in November 2003 following two consecutive appointments as a UW-PNNL Joint Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (JINN) graduate fellow. His research involves the design and creation of nanoscale functionality on high surface area materials, including mesoporous silica and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). These hierarchically structured materials are engineered for use in sensing, preconcentration, composite incorporation, separation and other environmental, structural, and energy-related applications.
Dr. Fifield has previously developed electromechanical actuators based on carbon nanotubes and noncovalent techniques for tuning CNT properties. He currently works with CNTs for many different applications including as supports for tethered homogeneous catalysts. He has special interest in electro-active organic composites, alternative energy utilization, and in nanotechnology in general.
